Teacher Training in Waldorf Education

The Waldorf Teacher Training at the Alkion Center is a three year part time program. The first two years (Foundation Studies) focus on the study of the written work of Rudolf Steiner and are complemented by intensive artistic practice and an introduction to contemplative inquiry.

A completed Foundation Studies course is a prerequisite for acceptance into the Waldorf Teacher Training Program.

After the successful completion of the Teacher Training program students may apply to Waldorf and Steiner Schools for a teaching position. The Alkion Center is on the path to membership to the Association of Waldorf Schools in North America (AWSNA), and in order to be certified by AWSNA a student needs two years of successful teaching in a Waldorf School after being mentored by a master teacher. Most Waldorf Schools require their teachers to have a BA from a certified college or University in addition to Waldorf Teacher training before they apply.

The Teacher Training year at the Alkion Center is taught on 27 Saturdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm over the course of the school year, following the Hawthorne Valley School calendar. Participation in two summer intensives is a requirement for graduation. The tuition for the third year is currently $4,200.00.

The curriculum of the Teacher Training is geared towards class teaching, grades 1 through 8. In some cases we have been able to supplement our courses accordingly for those who wish to specialize in the High School curriculum. We are also offering an Early Childhood Teacher Education program where the students will participate in some of the Teacher Training Courses.
