Early Childhood Teacher Education

A specialization in Waldorf Early Childhood Education will be offered through the Alkion Teacher Training program for those students whose focus is on the young child, ages 3-7. Courses will include Early Childhood Development from a Waldorf perspective, puppetry and storytelling, festivals and the cycle of the year, festival crafts and other handwork, the role of practical domestic activities, painting, music and circle work, healthy movement development, and the 12 senses. Along with the study of Early Childhood, classroom and nature activities, we will explore practices for inner work which serve self-development.

For the small child before the change of teeth, the most important thing in education is the teacher's own being.           --Rudolf Steiner

Students will be expected to accumulate many hours in Waldorf Kindergartens, in order to observe and participate in the living experience with the children. Prior study and/or experience in Early Childhood Education is very helpful but not required. However, the Early Childhood coursework must complement extensive classroom experience through internships or assistant teaching in order to prepare the student to lead a class.
